One day last spring as I was walking along Bolin Creek, I spotted an
incredibly beautiful caterpillar nibbling on a blade of grass. The
caterpiller was brilliant yellow and appeared, incredulously, to have
pink ears!
I lay down on the ground to take a picture, but was having
difficulty, so I picked the blade of grass and laid it on the ground.
As soon as I did that, the caterpillar began to crawl away.
As I continued taking pictures, an amazing change occurred. The pink ears
began to grow and then became wings! What I had been watching was the
final stage in the metamorphosis of a rosy maple moth!
